Nagorik Samaj to reassert as non-political entity, mediate

Nagorik Samaj, a new platform of prominent citizens, will hold a press conferee today (Friday) to make its position clear in public on the effort to resolve the ongoing political impasse through dialogue.
The press conference of eminent citizens, who took the initiative to pursue for holding a dialogue among political parties, will take place at Jatiya Press Club on Friday.
The eminent citizens led by immediate past chief election commissioner, ATM Shamsul Huda, are going to face journalists three days after sending letters separately to President Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in an effort to hold a national dialogue to resolve the ongoing political impasse.The immediate past chief election commissioner, ATM Shamsul Huda, sent the letters on Monday on behalf of the platform.
Awami League leader and Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed had termed the Nagorik Samaj’s initiative unacceptable and unrealistic.
BNP standing committee member Lt Gen (Retd) Mahbubur Rahman on the other hand welcomed the initiative saying that the prime minister could take steps considering the present situation and discuss the matter with the president.
General secretary of Sushasaner Jonno Nagorik (Sujan) Badiul Alam Mazumder, one of the initiators, confirmed that they would hold the press conference to make their initiative clear to the members of public.
The matter of sending letters to the President, the Prime Minister and the BNP chairperson would also come in the discussion, he said.
The Sujan chief said the people have become optimistic and encouraged with the nitiative of civil society people since they want an end of ongoing violence.
Meanwhile, a press release said the safety and security of the people are being severely disrupted due to violence pushing the political situation towards an uncertainty.
“Many citizens are worried and concerned in such a situation. We are also concerned at this situation,” said the statement.
Eminent citizens including ATM Shamsul Huda, M Hafizuddin Ahmed, Dr Akbar Ali Khan, CM Shafi Sami, Shahdin Malik, Syed Abul Maksud and Badiul Alam Majumder are expected to be present at the press conference.
Earlier on February 7, eminent citizens from professional groups organised a roundtable on the prevailing situation and adopted a resolution titled “National Dialogue to Resolve National Crisis.” The latest move is to assert the non-political charactrer of the group, sources said. – Staff Reporter
