Speakers at a human-chain programme in the city on Saturday demanded preparing a national policy to protect climate refugees.
Addressing the human-chain programme organized by Network on Climate Change, Bangladesh (NCC,B) in front of the National Press Club, they also urged the government to take necessary measures to ensure justice to the vulnerable people due to climate change.Moderated by Mizanur Rahman Bijoy, advocacy coordinator of NCC,B, the programme was also addressed, among others, by Mihir Biswas of Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA), Prodip Kumar Roy of Online Knowledge Society, Ranjan Bakshi Nupu, Gazi Manjururl Alam, Parvej Bhuiyan and Sabiruzzaman.
The speakers placed 10-point recommendations including taking plan for city-based migration and rehabilitation of climate refugees.
They also urged the government to take immediate measures to reduce emission of green house gases through signing legally binding agreement.
Organisers said, the NCC,B also organized human chain and held rallies in 11 districts at the same time on the same issue. The districts are—Khulna, Rajshahi, Magura, Jenaidah, Gopalganj, Pirojpur, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Sherpur, Madaripur and Sunamganj. – Staff eporter
