National Unity Front briefs diplomats Thursday

Dhaka, Oct 17 – The newly formed opposition alliance Jatiya Oikya Front will brief foreign diplomats about its formation, demands and visions and the overall situation prevailing in the country.“The Jatiya Oikya Front leaders will brief diplomats at Hotel Lakeshore in the city at 3:00 pm,” BNP standing committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf said this after a meeting of the alliance at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office last night.
He said the meeting also decided that the front leaders would exchange views with members of the civil society but no date has yet been fixed for it.
The elderly opposition leader said the meeting decided to form a liaison committee of the front and we will let the media to know the names of the committee members within a day or two.
He said after Sylhet public meeting, the front would hold a public meeting in Chittagong on October 27 and at Rajshahi on October 30. Earlier on Tuesday, the front at a meeting decided to hold its first public meeting in Sylhet on October 23.
Dr Mosharraf informed that they would visit the mazars of Hazrat Shahjalal (Rh) and Hazrat Shah Poran (Rh) before holding a public meeting in Sylhet.
Local leaders are negotiating the matter of permission for the public meeting with the local administration, he said.
Replying to a question, he said the numbers of liaison committee has not been fixed as more political parties are likely to join the front.
The closed-door meeting began at 9:30 pm and continued for about one hour. Leaders of other partners of the alliance JSD, Gano Forum and Nagorik Oikya for the first time joined the meeting at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office.
BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed, JSD vice president Tania Rab, general secretary Abdul Malek Ratan, Nagorik Oikya convenor Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Gano Forum leaders Advocate Subrata Chowdhury, Mostafa Mohsin Montu, among others, were present at the meeting.
Gano Sastha Kendra founder Dr Chowdhury and former adviser to the caretaker government Barrister Mainul Hosein were also present at the meeting.
Earlier, the meetings of the front were taken place at the residences of the leaders of different parties.
The Jatiya Oikya Front was floated through a press conference at Jatiya Press Club on October 13 with a seven-point charter of demands and 11-point visions to hold the next general elections in a free, fair and neutral manner. – Staff Reporter
