Nearly 200 opposition workers arrested in one night

The police arrested at least 183 BNP and Jamaat-Shibir activists all across the country during operations carried out in unison last night.
The police arrested 36 activists in Sylhet, 21 in Rangpur, 30 in Thakurgaon, 11 in Noakhali, 8 in Chadpur, and 77 in Bagura.A total of 36 people were arrested in Sylhet on suspicion of involvement in vandalism. Police carried out operation from Tuesday night up until 11 in the morning in Wednesday and arrested 8 people from Shahparan thana in the town, 1 from the Kotwali thana, 3 from the Jalalabad thana, 2 from south Surma thana, and 22 other people from all across the district.
21 activists of Jamaat and BNP were rounded up from 8 sub-districts in Rangpur last night. The arrested activists are being interrogated in custody, the police said.
The joint forces arrested 30 BNP – Jamaat activists in Thakurgaon during the night long operation in Tuesday. 15 from the Sadar sub-district, 3 from Pirganj, 5 from Ranishankailo, 5 from Haripur, 2 activists from Baliadangi were arrested, OC Abdur Razzak at the Thakurgaon Police Super Office (D.I.O – 1) informed. These activists were shown arrested in vandalism cases filed before and after the January 5 election.
11 BNP Jamaat activists were arrested in Noakhali from Noakhali district town and different sub-districts. Among the arrested 5 are BNP and 6 are Jamaat – Shibir activists. They were arrested on charges of vandalism.
8 BNP and Jamaat activists were arrested in Chadpur. In operation carried out from Tuesday overnight to Wednesday 10:00 am the police arrested these activists. 7 of these are BNP activists and 1 is a Shibir activist. They were arrested from Kachuwa, Faridganj, Sadar, Shahrasti, Matlab south.
77 Jamaat activists, including Bagura Jamaat president Shahabuddin were arrested during the overnight mass arrest in Bagura. The police say that the detained people were engaged in vandalism.
More arrests are likely to take place as the current government’s crackdown on opposition continues. – Agencies
