News Abducted CHT AL leader ‘buys freedom’

Khagrachhari, June 22 (UNB)- Guimara upazila unit president of Awami
League Mohammad Jahangir Alam and his motorcycle driver, who were
allegedly adducted by UPDF activists on Sunday, secured freedom after
five days ‘in exchange of huge ransom’.
Locals said Mohammad Jahangir Alam, 50, after being set free by the
abductors reached his residence at about 6.00pm on Friday.
Jahangir Alam told journalists that the abductors had taken them into
deep forest and confined them to a small room there but they did not
torture them in any way during the time.
After five days of confinement, the abductors set them free in
Maischhari area of Mohalchhari upazila on Friday afternoon.
Family members, quoting Jahangir Alam’s driver Haroon, said activists
of the United People’s Democratic Front released them after realising
Tk20 lakh as ransom.
However, Jahangir Alam remained tight-lipped when asked whether UPDF
men kidnapped them and they secured freedom for money.
Mohammad Bashir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Guimara thana, said
Jahangir Alam is now well and he is taking rest at his house.
On June 16, activists of UPDF abducted Mohammad Jahangir Alam, 50, and
his motorcycle driver Haroon from Baillachhari in Matiranga upazila
while they were going to Guimara on a motorcycle after withdrawing
money from a local bank.
