No election under present government: Khaleda

Dhaka, 02 Jan – BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday reiterated that there would be no election under the PM Sheikh Hasina led the present government which she termed is no elected government.“No election under Hasina has been held in a free and fair manner and there will not be any fair election under her in future. That’s why no election can be held under them,” she said while speaking as the chief guest at a rally of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the students wing of the party, in the city.
The former premier put emphasis on the need to dissolve the present parliament before the next general elections likely to be held later this year.
“The next general election should be held under a neutral government…The election should be held by dissolving the parliament. There will be no election keeping parliament in operative and also not under Hasina,” she said.
Khaleda said her party would take part in the election and there would be no election keeping her party outside this time.
“We will take part in the elections but it should be held under a neutral government. The people could realize that there will be no free and fair elected under Hasina,” she asserted.
The JCD organized the rally at Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) to mark its 39th founding anniversary.
The rally was scheduled to be held at 2:00pm but the JCD forced to start it at about 6:30pm as the IEB authority did not allow them to enter the hall room from 10:00am despite it gave approval to the organization.
The agitated leaders and workers sit in in front of the entrance of the IEB from the morning as the authority kept the gate under lock and key for hours.
The BNP chairperson reached the IEB in the afternoon and joined the sit in programme of the JCD until the main gate has been opened 5:32pm. The JCD was not given any explanation as to why they were not allowed to enter the auditorium for several hours.
Law enforcers said they did not obstruct the JCD to hold their rally. An IEB staff preferring anonymity however said that the authority took the measure for security reason as President Abdul Hamid was present at function at the Supreme Court premises in the afternoon.
Criticising the authority for keeping the IEB auditorium under lock, the BNP chairperson questioned the reason behind it.
She alleged that there is no democracy and elected government in the country saying that those are now in power are illegal.
“They (present government) are not elected. There is no rule of law and right to express…The country is run at one person’s will. That’s why all thing are going on but nothing is going. All things have become standstill and the country is going toward back,” she said.
Khaleda alleged that the chief justice has been forced to stay at his home, go abroad and tender his resignation at gun point.
She accused the ruling Awami League of carrying out too injustice to the BNP saying that though she has forgiven her but the Almighty would try them for their misdeeds.
“Their repression is many folds more than that of Pakistani rulers carried out,” she said.
The former premier blamed the AL responsible for creating militancy in the country. She warned that those are involved in anti-state activities along with the government would be sued in sedition cases.
She called upon the police administration to play a neutral role and not to shot at the opposition activists.
During her half an hour long speech, the BNP chief focused on the failure of the government and carrying out repression on the opposition.
The government has turned the country into a big prison. There is only Sheikh Hasina is free and all are confined, she claimed.
The BNP chairperson called upon the JCD leaders and activists to main unity, faith and discipline to succeed in the movement.
She hoped that the year 2018 would be a year of people, democracy, development and peace.
Presided over by JCD president Razib Ahsan, the rally also addressed, among others, by BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Dr Abdul Moin Khan, Abdullah Al Noman, Amanullah Aman. – Staff Reporter
