Though Jamaat claimed 24 of its leaders filed their candidature with BNP’s nomination letters, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday said all of those submitted nomination papers to the returning officers with BNP’s tickets belong to their party.
“There’s no one from Jamaat as all who submitted nominations with our tickets are from BNP and the Sheaf of Paddy,” he said. Fakhrul came up with the remarks at a press conference at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office as journalists wanted to know how many Jamaat leaders got BNP’s nomination forms. Jamaat sources said party’s 24 leaders got BNP’s nomination letters to contest the election as the Islamist party’s registration with the Election Commission was annulled.
Replying to a question, Fakhrul said their party did not give anyone nomination in five seats as senior leaders of the Oikyafront and the 20-party alliances are in the election race there. He said they have nominated more than one can candidatein most constituencies as most of their party leaders are facing many cases.
Sought his comment on a bill placed by representatives from the US congress expressing their concern over the role of Jamaat and other Islamic organisations, Fakhrul said he still did not go through the bill. “But I want to say they (US) are not playing the role what they should do to ensure a credible and acceptable election in Bangladesh.”Speaking at the programme, BNP standing committee member Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan questioned whether the US congress did not see who attacked the vehicle of its Ambassador here.
