No seat for 17,485 Comilla students this year

Around 17,485 students who passed the SSC examinations from Business
Studies group this year would not be able to get admitted to colleges due to
shortage of seats.
The uncertainty has been created over their admission as there are
only 52,575 seats for the Business Studies students under Comilla board against 70,060
students who have passed the SSC examinations from the group in 2013.
According to Comilla Education Board, a total of 1,16,307 students-70,060 from
Business Studies group, 23,351 from Science group and 22,896 from
Humanities group-have passed in the SSC examinations this year.
There are 313 colleges, including 34 government colleges, in Comilla, Chandpur,
Brahmanbaria, Feni, Laxmipur and Noakhali districts under Comilla Board.
For Science group students there are 7,400 seats in Government
colleges and 34,635 in private colleges, for Humanities group students there are 7500
seats in government colleges and 41,825 seats in private colleges and for Business Studies
group there are 10,200 seats in government colleges and 42,375 seats in private colleges.
Humayun Kabir, principal of Comilla Commerce College said the number Business
Studies students have been increasing day by day but the number of
seats in different colleges could not be increased as per the need.
Comilla Board college inspector Dr Nijamul Karim said more students are showing
interest in Business Studies education instead of Science education as
most of the colleges in the rural areas do not have sufficient facilities and
qualified teachers to provide proper science education.
