No unity with backers of secret killers: Hanif

Turning down BNP’s call for forging a national unity to stamp out militancy, Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-Ul-Alam Hanif on Tuesday said there can be no unity with the backers of terrorists and secret killers. “We can’t forge any unity with terrorists in the name of a national unity. You (BNP) talk about unity on one hand and give shelter to silent killers on the other…it can’t be allowed to happen,” he said. Dhaka, UNB News Agency Reported.

The ruling party leader said this while addressing a joint meeting of Awami League Dhaka city units (North and South) at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city. The meeting was convened as part of preparation to celebrate the party’s founding anniversary through various programmes on June 23.

The AL joint general secretary urged BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to sever ties with Jamaat-e-Islami. “You’ll have to sever ties with Jamaat if you have the responsibility to the country’s people. Stop patronising secret killers first and then we’ll think whether there could be any unity with you.”

About the recent secret killings, Hanif said Bangladesh’s image abroad is being tarnished for such incidents. An attempt is on to create panic among the people of the country through secret killings. Food Minister Quamrul Islam and AL organising secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, among others, spoke at the programme held with AL Dhaka South unit general secretary Shahe Alam Murad in the chair.
