Noman for talks on fresh polls, EC reconstitution

Renewing his party’s demand for a fresh election, BNP vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman on Wednesday urged the government to engage in talks for holding a fresh election and reconstitution of the Election Commission.
“No undemocratic government could hang onto power with the help of state machinery, police and Rab. This government won’t able to do so, too. A fresh and inclusive election is now a demand of the entire nation. This Election Commission must be reconstituted. Let’s sit together to discuss these issues,” he said. Noman, a former minister, was addressing a rally in the city.As part of the five-day progamme announced by BNP Dhaka district unit demanding the release of Amanullah Aman, Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal arranged the protest rally at the Jatiya Press Club.
A Dhaka court sent BNP joint secretary general Aman to jail on Sunday when he surrendered before it.
Mentioning that people did not go to the polling centres to exercise their franchise during the January-5 parliamentary elections, Noman urged the government to hold a fair and free election soon on political consensus.
“We urge the government to finalise the election system through negotiation. We want such a fair election where people can cast their votes and political parties can participate in it,” he said.
About the Election Commission, the BNP vice chairman said the Election Commission was formed with Awami League cadres. “It’ll have to form a fresh credible Commission dissolving the current one.”
He also warned that people will realise their demands through movement if the government does not resolve the political crisis through talks.- UNB
