Odhikar Scy Adilur’s remand order stayed

The High Court on Monday stayed the lower court order that placed Odhikar secretary Adilur Rahman on a five-day remand.
An HC bench comprising Justice Borhan Uddin Ahmed and Kashifa Hossain passed the order upon a writ petition challenging the legality of the remand.
The court also issued a rule upon the government asking it as to why the remand order against Adilur Rahman would not be declared illegal.
The HC order, however, says Adilur could be interrogated at the jail gate, if necessary.
Plainclothes police arrested Adilur Rahman Khan from near his Gulshan residence on Saturday night for releasing an “unsubstantiated” report by Odhikar on the crackdown on Hefajat-e-Islam men at city’s Shapla Chattar in the early hours of May 6 this year.
Earlier, on Sunday, a court granted a five-day remand for Adilur Rahman Khan in the case filed under section 57 (1) and (2) of the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Act-2006, which is punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to 10 years and with a fine up to Tk one crore. – UNB
