DHAKA – A court today put Odhikar Secretary Adilur Rahman on a five-day remand in connection with his “controversial report’ saying 61 people were killed in Dhaka siege programme of Hefajat-e-Islam.Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Amit Kumar Dey this noon passed the order rejecting his bail petition filed by Supreme Court Bar Association President Mohammad Ali.
Inspector Ashraful Islam of Detective Branch (DB) of police, who is also the Investigation officer (IO) of the case, produced Adilur a rights watchdog organisation secretary
before the CMM Court at about 1.45 pm with a 10-day remand prayer.
Plainclothes police detained Khan under the Information shortly after filing a general diary (GD) with Gulshan Police Station, from in front of his Gulshan residence in the city on Saturday at 10.30 pm. Soon after his detention, Khan was taken to the DB headquarters at Minto Road
The case was filed under section 57 (1) and (2) of the Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Act- 2006,” DB Joint-Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Monirul Islam told journalists at a press conference today.
“In an investigation report of Adhikar, a local human rights group, published on June 10 said that 61 Hefajat activists were killed as law enforcement agencies swooped on agitating Islamists in capital’s Shapla Chattar area on May 5 and 6,” he added. – BSS
Our Court Correspondent adds; Police filed the GD for uploading a report on Odhikar website that claimed that 61 people were killed during the May 5 crackdown on Hefajat-e-Islam rally at Motijheel in the capital, according to a source of Detective Branch (DB) of police.
Odhikar also uploaded several “fake” photos of the drive on its webpage, the sources added.
On May 5, law enforcers allegedly flushed out several thousand Hefajat activists who took to the street and resorted to the alleged mayhem following the Dhaka seize programme of the religious group.
When contacted, Nasiruddin Elan, director of Odhikar told The Independent on Saturday that DB police have been following the activities of the organisation for several days and earlier the law enforcers had also called Khan at their office.
Khan’s wife denied the allegations against her husband and said police arrested him without any arrest warrant.
Later Home Minister MK Alamgir on Sunday said Adilur Rahman Khan, secretary of human rights organization Odhikar, was arrested on basis of specific charges.
The home minister came up with the assertion while talking to journalists after Eid holidays at his secretariat office on Sunday noon.
He said, “It is offensive to tarnish country’s image in the name of protecting human rights. Charges brought against Adilur are under investigation.”
He said Jamaat’s hartal is being considered as the contempt of court.
On Saturday night, a cyber crime team of Detective Branch of Police of DMP held the former attorney General, also secretary of Odhikar Adilur Rahman, from his Gulshan residence for his alleged involvement in violation of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Act.
