Odhikar secretary sent from police custody to jail

Human rights group Odhikar Secretary Advocate Adilur Rahman Khan was sent to the jail after he was produced to Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court on Tuesday afternoon.Magistrate Mostafa Shahriar Khan took the decision to send former Deputy Attorney General Khan to the jail, following a High Court order.
Investigation Officer Ashraful Islam produced him to the court. The court further said that Adilur Rahman could be quizzed at the jail gate if necessary.
Adilur Rahman’s lawyer Asaduzzaman told the court, “Adilur Rahman Khan is a lawyer of the Supreme Court. He also served as the Deputy attorney General and General Secretary of Supreme Court Bar Association earlier.
So, he deserves first class division facilities in the jail” and the court rejected this plea.
On August 11, Adilur Rahman was placed on a five-day remand on charges of publishing ‘fabricated information’ on May 5,6 crackdown on the Hefazat-e-Islam at city’s Motijheel Shapla Chattar area.
However, the High Court on Monday stayed the lower court order of remand for interrogation.
Meanwhile, the US government has voiced deep concern over the arrest of human rights activist Adilur Rahman Khan and urged the Bangladeshi authorities to immediately release Adil.
“The government of the United States is deeply concerned by the August 10 detention of Adilur Rahman Khan, who is the Secretary of the internationally-respected Bangladeshi human rights organization Odhikar,” Deputy Spokesperson of the US State Department said in a statement received here on Tuesday morning.
It said the US authorities have reached out to the government of Bangladesh for an explanation, noting that this detention has a chilling effect on Bangladeshi civil society and is reverberating negatively around the world.
