‘Operation Irene’ against arms import at Ctg port from Monday

Dhaka – Customs Intelligence will launch a two-day special drive titled ‘Operation Irene’ in Chittagong port on Monday against the smuggling of small arms, explosives and drugs in the guise of parcels, UNB news agency has reported.Deputy Director of Customs Intelligence (CI) of Chittagong Shamimur Rahman told UNB that the special operation will be carried out as part of global operation Irene of Regional Intelligence Liaison Office, Asia Pacific (RILO AP).
The RILO AP headquarters is situated in South Korea and Bangladesh is under this office. “Such kind of special operation is going on in land, airports and sea ports of the 33 member states,” he said.
The special drive will begin at 11 am to recover illegal firearms, explosives and drugs if imported using sea the route on false declarations, said a CI official said requesting anonymity.
The CI will use dog squad of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to detect explosives and drugs inside parcels if there are any, he said.
Earlier, such drives were conducted at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Shah Amanat International Airport and Benapole land port.
