BNP-led 18-party alliance-backed candidates have won mayoral elections in the four city corporations of Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi and Barisal by wide margins.
banglanews23.com reported, In Sylhet, Ariful Haque was elected mayor in a landslide victory in the city corporation polls.
According to unofficial results, Arif bagged 106,485 votes while his nearest candidate Awami League-backed Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran got 72,047 votes in all 128 polling centres.
In Barisal, M Ahsan Habib Kamal was elected mayor of the city corporation.
According to unofficial results of the Barisal City Corporation (BCC) polls, Kamal bagged 83,751 votes while his nearest candidate Awami League-backed M Shawkat Hossain Hiron managed 67,741 votes in all 100 polling centres.
In Khulna, Moniruzzaman Moni was elected as the next city corporation mayor.
According to unofficial results of the Khulna City Corporation (KCC) polls, Moniruzzaman Moni bagged 181,265 votes while the Awami League-backed candidate Talukder Abdul Khalek managed 120,058 in all 288 polling centres.
In Rajshahi, Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul won the city corporation mayoral elections.
According to unofficial results of the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) polls, BNP backed Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul got 131,058 votes while his nearest candidate AHM Khairuzzaman Liton bagged 83,726 in all 137 polling centres.
Earlier, voting in the city corporation ended peacefully at 4 pm. There was no report of any major incident of violence during the voting that started at 8am.
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Ansar members alongside that of police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) were deployed in the election area to maintain law and order.(Source: UNB)
The BNP-led 18-party alliance-backed mayoral candidates have stretched their lead further in the battle of ballots in Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal according to the latest vote count as of 8:30 pm on Saturday.
In Khulna City Corporation polls, 18-party alliance-supported M Moniruzzaman Moni got 43,574 votes while his rival Talukder Abdul Khaleque of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance bagged 27,052 votes in 62 out of 288 centres.
In Barisal, Ahsan Habib Kamal of the 18-party alliance bagged 45,812 votes while his rival candidate Shawkat Hossain Hiron 40,027 votes in 59 out of 100 centres.
The opposition-backed Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul got 23,007 votes in 28 out of 137 centres. On the other hand, the Awami League-led ruling alliance-suported AHM Khairuzzaman Lition bagged 14,840 votes in the centres.
Earlier, voting in the four city corporations ended peacefully at 4 pm with the high turnout of voters.
There was no report of any major incident of violence during the voting that started at 8am and continued till 4pm without any break.
Sources said a chase and counter-chase between the activists of two councillor candidates caused disruption in voting for half an hour at the ward No 27 polling centre of Khulna City Corporation.
Later, law enforcers brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, voting at Rupatali Government Primary School in Barisal remained suspended from 1:40 pm to 3 pm due to a clash between the workers of Awami League-supported candidates Shawkat Hossain Hiran and BNP-backed Ahsan Habib Kamal.
