Dhaka – A court n Dhaka on Thursday placed Mohammad Kamal, arrested in connection with the sexual harassment of several women during Pahela Baishakh celebrations on the Dhaka University campus last year, on a two-day remand.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abdullah Al Masud passed the order after sub-inspector of Detective Branch (DB) of Police Dipok Kumar Das produced Kamal before the court seeking a seven-day remand for him.The court also rejected a petition filed by Kamal’s lawyer seeking cancellation of any remand.
Police arrested Mohammad Kamal, 35, from his residence at Khaji Dewan 1st lane on Wednesday evening.
During preliminary interrogations, Kamal confessed his involvement to the incident, DMP Deputy Commissioner (media) Maruf Hossain Sardar told UNB on Thursday.
On December 13, 2015, the DB officer submitted the final report to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court for disposal of the case filed in connection with the sexual harassment as eight people, who were identified through scrutinising video footage, could not be arrested.
On December 22, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibul Haque sent the report to Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sheikh Hafizur Rahman for taking next steps.
Later, Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Sheikh Hafizur Rahman sent the report to Judge of Dhaka’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-3 Joyasri Samaddar in January this year for final disposal of the case.
Meanwhile, Dipok Kumar Das also filed a petition with the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal to revive the case today (Thursday).
The court will hear the petition on February 23.
A group of youths assaulted and sexually harassed some women at Suhrawardy Udyan gate near Dhaka University’s TSC during the Pahela Baishakh celebrations on April 14 in 2015.
A case was then filed with Shahbagh Police Station against an unspecified number of unnamed people on April 17.
Later, detectives identified eight of the assaulters, including Kamal, scrutinising video footage. – UNB
