Panels to probe JMB convict-snatching, Quamrul smells al-Qaeda

Two separate inquiry committees have been formed to look into the snatching of three convicted members of the banned militant outfit Jama’at-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) from a prison van in Mymensingh.
The Home Ministry formed a four-member probe panel, headed by its Additional Secretary Nazimuddin Chowdhury while the Police Headquarters constituted the other three-man committee, led by Deputy Inspector General (Current Charge) of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Syful Alam.
The other three members of the committee formed by the Home Ministry are its Deputy Secretary Khairul Kabir Menon, DIG (Dhaka Range) SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman and DIG (Prisons) Tipu Sultan, said the Home Ministry sources.Meanwhile, the two other members of the Police Headquarters’ committee are — Additional DIG (Dhaka Range) Khondoker Golam Faruk and AIG (Crime-East) of Police Headquarters Md Abdul Alim Mahmud, said senior information officer of the police headquarters, AKM Quamrul Ahsan.
The committees have been asked to come up with their reports within three working days.
Miscreants snatched the condemned JMB convicts Rakib Hasan Russel and Salahuddin and lifer Boma Mizan from the prison van killing a policeman in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh in the morning.
However, one of the convicts and two snatchers were held later.
Food Minister Quamrul Islam on Sunday aid the snatching of three convicted JMB men indicates the active role of al-Qaeda agents in the country.
“The way criminals snatched three convicted JMB men, it indicates the active role of Al Qaeda’s agent. It seems that the militants are conspiring afresh,” he said.
He said this while addressing the council of Khilgaon, Mugdha and Sabujbagh units of Awami League Dhaka City unit at Khilgaon Jhorpukur ground in the city.
In a daring terror strike on a prison van on Sunday, militants snatched three convicted members of the banned militant outfit Jama’at-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh killing a cop, but one of them was captured hours later in Tangail.
Quamrul said, “Jamaat and Hefajat are the agents of al-Qaeda and BNP is their disciple. BNP was born through Bangabandhu’s assassination. They had committed all the killings.”
Health Minister Mohammad Nasim said, “Awami League is not afraid of BNP. But we’re afraid of people. People wouldn’t forgive us if we make any mistake. We don’t care those who are afraid of launching a movement.”Local MP Saber Hosain Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the programme held with Khilgaon thana AL president Alamgir Chowdhury in the chair.
