We’ll remain in power for 5 yrs: Ershad

Kurigram – Jatiya Party chairman and special envoy to the Prime Minister, HM Ershad on Sunday said the present government would be there in power for five years, and no situation has created in the country that requires a midterm election.
“I don’t know whether the government has any plan about holding any midterm election. I think, no situation has created which requires a midterm election,” he said. The JP chief, considered as an unpredictable political leader, also said the last national election, held on January 5, has been acceptable. “So, we’ll remain there in power for five years, Inshallah.”
Ershad, now on an organizational tour here, came up with the remarks while talking to journalists at the local Circuit House.
Responding to a question on JP-backed candidates’ debacle in the just-held Upazila Parishad polls, he said, “It’s not an election of plough… the results were not satisfactory as there had been more than one candidates.”
The chief JP, which is also playing the role of the opposition in the 10th parliament, claimed that there is no infighting in his party.
Later, Ershad exchanged views with the local JP leaders.
While leaving the Circuit House, Ershad told his supporters that he does not want to make any comment in favour of any candidate (upazila polls). “It’ll be the violation of the code of conduct since candidates have been named.”
He also asked his supporters to analyse the just-held election results of the upazila parishad. “Jamaat has got higher votes compared to us. Their success rate in the polls is also better than us. It’s a shame for us.”
Ershad called upon his supporters to work together. – UNB
