Various government, non-government, volunteer and cultural organisations including the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) and the district administration have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day in a befitting manner tomorrow as elsewhere in the country.The programmes include placing of floral wreaths at Shaheed Minar, hoisting of national flags at half-mast atop all public and private buildings and morning procession.
There will be miniature national flags and coloured flags inscribed with Bengali alphabets in the city streets. Qurankhwani and discussion at the Islamic Foundation office, art and literary competitions for school and college students at the Shishu Academy, and screening of documentary films on the Language Movement are other programmes of the day.Language veterans will be accorded a reception on the occasion. Besides, a discussion and cultural function will be organised at the auditorium of Shilpakala Academy, the officials concerned here said.The RCC has taken up elaborate programmes to observe the day. Acting Mayor of RCC Nizam-Ul Azim is likely to open the day’s programme by placing wreaths at Bhuban Mohan Park Shaheed Minar at zero hours.Leaders of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangshad, Awami League (AL) and other political
parties, professional organisations and common people will place wreaths there to pay homage to the Language Movement Martyrs.Meanwhile, Rajshahi University, Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Rajshahi Medical College and other educational institutions adopted various programmes to observe the day.Two firearm traders detained in Chapainawabgonj Chapainawabgonj Correspondent Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) detained two alleged firearm traders with a foreign pistol and some ammunitions from Moharajpur area in the district town early hours today, RAB sources said here yesterday.The arrested were identified as Selim Hossain, 25, and Somel Ali, 28.On a tip-off, a team of the elite forces carried out a drive in the area under Sadar Upazila of the town around 1.30 am and arrested them with a pistol, two magazines and a bullet.Quoting the confessional statement the sources said the arrested were professional firearms businessmen.A case was recorded with the police station concerned in this connection.The arrested were handed over to police with the seized firearm and ammunition.BSS, Rajshahi
