People are losing faith in the govt: BNP

The victory of the 19-Party alliance-backed candidates in the first phase of Upazila Parishad elections has shown that people are losing faith in the government, a senior BNP leader has claimed.
At a discussion held at the press club on Saturday, Khandker Mosharraf Hossain also termed the Awami League government formed through the Jan 5 parliamentary polls as ‘abnormal and unelected’.Candidates of the BNP-led alliance won in 56 Upazila chairman elections held on Wednesday at 97 local bodies, while the ruling party won in 33.
“An unelected and illegal government has come to power through a farcical election. The people have begun to respond against that in the upazila polls.”
He hoped the voters will continue to do that in the upcoming phases as well.
“People did not go to cast their votes when BNP boycotted the Jan 5 elections. But more than 62 percent voters voted in the first phase as our supporters are contesting in the upazila polls.”
The BNP Standing Committee member criticised Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu for making ‘big claims’. For instance, Mosharraf said, when reporters asked him about how the Jamaat-e-Islami backed candidate won in his Upazila, Inu replied “the matter would have to be researched.”
Mosharraf further said, “The government will understand that the people do not want them if they conduct a research to find the reasons of our victory in the first phase polls.”
The BNP leader also criticised the government’s repression policy against the leaders and activists of the BNP and its allies.-bdnews24.com
