Police have arrested former Sundarganj Upazila Parishad Vice Chairman and Awami League leader Ahsan Habib Masud in connection with the murder of Awami League MP Manjurul Islam Liton.Masud was arrested from his home in the Sundarganj town on Sunday morning, seven days after Liton’s murder, said Sundarganj police OC Atiar Rahman.However, according to Sundarganj Municipal Mayor Abdullah al-Mamun, police had detained Masud for interrogation on Friday.Masud’s borther, Golam Murtaza Tuku told bdnews24.com that Masud had not returned home since he was picked up.
Six Jamaat-e-Islami activists have been taken on police remand in connection with the murder on Sunday.They were identified as Md Farid Mia, 70, Samiul Islam, 32, Hadisur Rahman, 30, Ziaur Rahman, 32, Hazrat Ali, 44, and Nabinur Khandaker.MP Liton was shot dead at his home at Shahbaz in Sundarganj on Dec 31. Witnesses said five persons were involved with the murder.Liton’s sister has filed a case mentioning ‘unidentified persons’ as killers.Police have so far detained 53 people for questioning in the case. Of these detainees 29 have been sent to prison by the court under various charges.The six JMB activists were arrested from various places in Sundarganj on Friday. Police filed a remand petition for the six in connection with the murder on Saturday.Gaibandha Chief Magistrate Moinul Hasan Yusuf granted the remand for seven days on Sunday, court Inspector Enamul Haque said.
