Mahfuza Malek Jasmine ‘admitted to killing’ the two children once during initial interrogation by RAB and again in police custody, but ‘without any emotion’, the law enforcers said.Though the mother of two slain children has ‘admitted’ to the crime, police suspect there might be someone else behind the murders.Dhaka City police Deputy Commissioner Anwar Hossain spoke about the doubt of her claim on Sunday.”We suspect there might be someone else involved in the incident. Police are doing their best to solve the case,” he said.Rampura OC Mustafizur Rahman, who is investigating the case, said police were searching for answers to the questions – Did Jasmine really kill her children? Was she alone? What was the motive? Was there any problem with her husband ‘Amanullah’? Was she mentally sound?Doctors declared Viqarunnisa Noon School student Nusrat Aman Oroni, 14, and her brother Alvi Aman, 6, dead when they were brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in a state of unconsciousness on Feb 29.
The family claimed they had died after eating the leftovers of food brought from a local Chinese restaurant the previous night.But forensic experts at DMCH found bruises and finger prints on their throats as well as injury marks on several parts of their bodies during the autopsy the next day.Later, the RAB said Jasmine told them she ‘killed the children out of anxiety over their future’.Investigation officer Rahman said he spoke to schoolteacher Mohammad Abdul Quader, the landlord of the house where the family lived.Quader said Oroni was a brilliant student.Shamina Khatun, a teacher of Holly Crescent School where Alvi studied, the boy had stood sixth in the last exam.”He was a regular student and nobody complained about his activities,” she said.Jasmine’s brother Zakir Hossain told that he did not believe his sister could kill anyone. “She loved her children very much,” he said.Investigator Rahman said police will also interrogate Jasmine’s husband Amanullah and her mother-in-law who is at the family’s ancestral home Jamalpur.Garment trader Amanullah and Jasmine are cousins.
