Police injured tea stall owner dies, 5 cops closed

A case was filed on Thursday noon against five persons including a police source. The details about the case are yet to be known.
Babul Matobbar, 45, a tea stall owner who sustained burn injuries allegedly by  policemen on Wednesday night, succumbed to the injuries on Thursday noon at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).Babul’s family sources said several policemen came to his shop on Wednesday night in Mirpur`s Gudaraghat area and demanded extortion. When Bablu refused, police source beat him up with a stick. During the alleged assault, he kicked a stove in the stall and a hot-water-filled kettle landed on Babul, causing him severe burns.Partha Sankar Pal, Director of Burn unit of DMCH, said Babul had suffered 95 per cent burn injuries.
Denying the allegation, Officer-in-Charge of Shah Ali Police Station Shahin Mondal said Babul had a scuffle with Delwar, a police informant, however, they are trying to arrest him.
Meanwhile, victim’s son Raju claimed that a police team went to their shop around 9.30 pm and demanded toll. As Babul refused to pay the toll, one of the policemen allegedly hit the kerosene stove with a stick and the stove overturned and fell onto Babul and soon fire engulfed him, Raju added. – Court Correspondent
