Pro-AL Jananetri Parishad seeks Khaleda’s arrest

Dhaka, Feb 14 – Pro-Awami League organization, Bangladesh Jananetri Parishad President AB Siddiqui, Wednesday filed a petition with the Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka seeking arrest of imprisoned BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in a defamation case lodged for allegedly undermining the national flag and map of Bangladesh.While the CMM court said it will deliver its order in this regard after hearing the petition. Magistrate Ahsan Habib is likely to hear the case for deciding whether the imprisoned BNP leader will be shown arrested in the defamation case or not.
AB Siddiqui, filed the case on November 3, 2016 with Gulshan Police Station of the city accusing Khaleda Zia and her late husband slain President Ziaur Rahman of undermining Bangladesh's map and flag.
According to the complaint, Khaleda Zia appointed ministers from Jamaat-e- Islami Banglaedesh and handed over the map and the national flag of Bangladesh to them who had fought against the country during the War of Liberation in 1971.
Later, on October 12 last year, the court issued arrest warrant against the BNP Chief in the case.
Meanwhile, on February 8, the BNP Chief and three times Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years imprisonment in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case, while five other convicts of the case were sentences to 10 years in prison with a fine of Tk 2,10,71,671each. – Special Correspondent
