Savar (Dhaka), Feb 19 – A faction of pro-Awami League (AL) teachers of Jahangirnagar University (JU) on Monday blockaded the administrative building for two hours protesting threat on their fellows.The teachers loyal to former VC Prof. Shariff Enamul Kabir, took position in front of the administrative building from 11.00am to 1.00pm under the banner of ‘Bangabandhur Adorsho O Muktijuddher Chetonay Bishwashi Progotisheel Shikkhok Somaj’.
Presidium member of the group, Prof. Luthfor Rahman of Drama and Dramatics department alleged that, “After newly re-appointing the JU VC Prof. Farzana Islam, her loyal teachers are threatening our party’s men to suspend from their posts as they did not support her to be VC for a second term. In this regards, we will protest all kinds of threat.”
Among others, former VC Prof. Shariff Enamul Kabir, the president and the general secretary of JU teachers Association, Prof. Asit Baron Paul, Prof. Ajit Kumar Mozumder, Prof. Laek Sazzad Andallah took part in the movement.
On information, the AL-backed teachers fell divided centering the reappointment of Prof Dr. Farzana Islam as the Vice Chancellor for the second time. Both the fractions alleged of getting threatened by one another.
Earlier on Sunday at a press meet, organizing secretary of the organization Prof Bashir Ahmed, along with its other five members –loyal to VC Prof Dr. Farzana Islam– alleged of being threatened by opponent section.
He said: ‘We were served show-cause notice from the organization through email illegally’.
Meanwhile, pro-Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) backed teachers withdrew their nomination paper from the upcoming teachers association election marking their political crisis as their party’s chairman recently landed on jail. They made the announcement at a press conference yesterday at the press meet on the campus.
By the way, some teachers alleged that pro-BNP backed teachers have made collaboration with VC backed AL teachers to mark the upcoming Juta election. However, Pro-BNP teachers denied the allegations.
On the day, teachers of both the factions started campaigning on the campus. – JU Correspondent
