Production in Thakurgaon Sugarcane Mill suspended

Dhaka  – Production in Thakurgaon Sugarcane Mill has been suspended for inadequate supply of sugarcane by some contractors.Despite adequate supply of sugarcane by sugarcane growers, the negligence of the errant contractors has also led to an insufficient stock of sugarcane, hampering sugarcane crushing in the mill, according to mill officials.In such a situation, the in-charges of the selling centres have asked the sugarcane growers not to bring sugarcane,UNB news agency reported.Many sugarcane growers in the district are facing difficulties following the order as they have already harvested sugarcane from their field.The mill authorities said each contractor has taken Tk 2,700 for loading per maund sugarcane on the mill’s trolley.Ramjan Ali, a contractor who collected sugarcane from Salandar, Khatsingia, Banglagorh and Nasibganj selling centres, has alleged that he cannot load the supply on the trolley for lack of workers.Jahangir Alam, in-charge of Salandar sugarcane selling centre, said the workers declined to work following bargains over their wages offered by the contractor concerned.Besides, there has been an allegation against Ramjan Ali of cheating workers.Enayet Hossain, managing director of Thakurgaon Sugarcane Mill, said they have taken initiatives to solve the problem.This year, the mill has set a target to produce 7,975 tonnes of sugar by crushing 1.10 thousand tonnes of sugarcane, he said.
