‘Proposal from Khaleda for talks on fresh polls awaited’

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia will give a proposal to the government to sit across the table for holding free ad fair polls be participated by all political parties.
Secretary General of Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB) Maj (Retd) Abdul Mannan told reporters following a meeting of former premier Khaleda Zia with BDP chief and former President Dr AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office on Thursday night.
Meeting sources said, the BNP and the BDB reached an agreement to carryout movement for holding a fresh election son and to restore the democratic process in the country.BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told reporters that the current political stalemate in the country came up in the discussion between the two leaders.
“Decision to build democratic national unity for restoration of democracy in the country has been taken in the meeting,” he said.
The BNP leader said decision has already been taken to carry out movement against the present government that assumed in office “illegally” and running the country “immorally”.
Fakhrul said both the BNP and BDB would do work together for restoration of democracy in the future.
“The movement can be taken place either under an alliance or simultaneously or separately,” he added.
Major Mannan said talks between the government and the opposition parties are needed to ensure voting rights of the people.
He termed the present government illegal saying that they assumed in office through lopsided farcical elections. “Most of the people were deprived from franchising their rights,” he added.
Replying to a question, the BDB leader said there is no alternative to sit across the table.
“We need to hold discussion with the government. She (Khaleda) has given her consent to propose the government for discussion,” he added.
The BDB leader said there is no possibility to join the 19-party alliance.
He, however, said that they would carryout movement unitedly for the sake of the country and its democracy and the independence.
BDB leader Mahi B Chowdhury said neither any political party nor the people accepted the present government that assumed in office through holding “farcical polls”.
“Along with 19-party alliance, no political party took part in the polls. We want a fresh election in the country without any delay,” he added.
Earlier, the meeting between Khaleda Zia and B Chowdhury began at 9:10pm and lasted for one and half an hours.- Staff Reporter
