Public university teachers protest RU prof murder

Teachers of the public universities observed their pre-announced three-hour work abstention programme on Monday day in protest of killing of the Rajshahi University professor.
The teachers under the banner of Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association (BFUTA) started their skipping their works at their campuses from 10:00am demanding trial of the murder as part of their solidarity.
The teachers wearing black badges continued their programme till at 1pm.

Meanwhile, alongside the work abstention, teachers, students and different organisations of the public universities yesterday continued their demonstrations on their respective campuses demanding justice.
RU students brought out a coffin procession around 10:00am and paraded the campus. Later, they held a rally at Mukul Mancha, a makeshift platform set up after the nickname of the slain professor.
Rubaida Lopa, a senior teacher of English Department said they would continue their protest programme till May 18 although the university is going to be closed from May 5 to 25 due to summer vacation.
FBUTA will hold a protest rally at the RU campus today and tomorrow and then submit a memorandum to the home minister.

Jahangirnagar University Teachers association (JUTA) observed work abstention Monday (Monday) protesting the killing of Rajshahi University Professor AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique from 10am to 1pm here at the campus.
On the day around 10am teachers gathered in front of new arts faculty building and observed the work abstention programme.
Secretary of JUTA Associate Prof Bashir Ahmed said we demanding immediate arrest of the killers and urged the authority concerned to ensure the safety of all university teachers.
Among others President of JUTA Prof Ajit Kumar Majumdar, Dean of Social Science Faculty Prof Amir Hossain, Prof Shamsul Alam, Prof Khaled Hossain, Prof ASM Abu Dayen, Associate Prof Hosne Ara presented the protest programme. – JU Correspondent
The teachers of Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) on Monday observed 3 hr work abstention demanding punishment to the killers of Rajshahi University English Prof AFM Rejaul Karim Siddiqui.
Teachers of different faculties abstained from taking classes from 10:00am to 1:00pm and staged demonstration at agriculture faculty corridor on the campus from 12:00pm to 1:00pm wearing black badges, protesting the gruesome killing.
BAUTA President Prof Dr Md Solaiman Ali Fakir, General Secretary Prof Dr Md Abul Hashem, Prof Dr Rafiqul Isalm Sarder, Prof Dr Khandakar Shariful Islam, Prof Dr Mohammed Moniruzzaman, Prof Dr Ariful Islam among others, spoke in the programme.
The speakers, in their speeches, said such kind of crimes would happen repeatedly if the culprits are not given capital punishment.
They urged the government to ensure exemplary punishment finding out the criminals immediately. – BAU Correspondent
