Rana Plaza owner’s accomplice on remand

A Dhaka court on Tuesday placed Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana’s key associate Abu Bakr Siddique on a two-day remand to interrogate him about the collapse of Rana Plaza.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Afroza Seuli of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court of Dhaka passed the order after hearing. Earlier, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Assistant Superintendent (ASP) of Police Bijoy Krishna Kar sought a five-day remand to quiz accused Abu Bakr. He was also sent to the court on the occasion.The remand prayer says that Abu Bakr with his accomplices compelled the workers of different garment factories to enter into the cracked building on the fateful day, which caused the death of 1,136 people after the collapse of the building.
Abu Bakr remained at large so long and acting of a tip-off, police nabbed him on Monday at 5 pm in front of the collapsed building. He hailed from Mollabari village of Gournadi upazila in Barisal. His father is Joynal Molla of the village.
So far 22 people including Sohel Rana were arrested in connection with the devastating collapse of a building.
The building collapsed on April 24 last year, which caused the death of 1,136 workers and more than 2500 people were injured in the incident, many of them were injured seriously. Besides, many workers are traceless since the catastrophe. – Court Correspondent
