Record 80 pc turnout in Sunday’s parliament election: CEC

Dhaka, Dec 31 – The 11th parliamentary polls on December 30 has seen the highest turnout of voters about 80 per cent breaking the records of the previous all general elections. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda yesterday came up with the turnout of voters in the just concluded elections saying the turnout was about 80 per cent.
A total of 39 political parties contested the 11th general election in 299 seats as election to one seat Gaibandha-3 will be held on 27 January 2019 as one of its candidates died.
In the eleventh parliamentary polls EC announced the result of 298 seats in which Awami League (AL) won 259 seats, Jatiya Party (Ershad) won 20 seats, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) 5, Gonoforum 2,
Bikalpadhara Bangladesh 2 seats, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) 2, Workers Party 3, Tarikat Federation 1, Jatiya Party (Manju) 1 and Independent 3.
The result of Brahmanbaria-3 constituency was suspended due to anomalies and irregularities in three centres of the constituency. The final result would be given after holding fresh polls to the three
centres.
The tenth parliamentary election held on 5 January 2014 witnessed 40.04 per cent turnout when BNP and some other parties boycotted the polls.
In 2014 election, AL won 234 seats while the opposition JP secured 34 seats. The contesting parties were 12.
In the ninth general election held on 29 December 2008, the turnout of voters was 87.13 per cent. In the election, AL won 230 seats while BNP 30 and JP (Ershad) 27. The contesting parties were 38.
The eighth general election held on 1 October 2001 had a turnout of voters was 75.59 per cent and the contesting political parties were 54. BNP won 195 seats, AL won 58 seats and JP (Ershad) secured 14
seats.
The seventh general election held on 12 June 1996 witnessed a turnout of voters 74.96 per cent and the contesting parties were 81. AL secured 146 seats, BNP won 116 seats and JP (Ershad) won 32 seats.
The sixth general election held on 15 February 1996 had a voter turnout of 20.97 per cent and the contesting parties were 43. Most of the political parties including AL boycotted the poll. BNP won 278

In the fifth general election held on February 27, 1991, the turnout of voters was 55.45 per cent and the contesting parties were 75. BNP won 140 seats, AL got 88, JP (Ershad) won 35 and Jamaat-e-Islami
Bangladesh 18 seats.
In the fourth parliamentary election held on March 3, 1988, the turnout of voters was 57.90 per cent. Jatiya Party won 251 seats.
AL, BNP, Community Party of Bangladesh, Jamaat-E-Islami Bangladesh, The Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League, The National Awami Party (Muzaffar) and Workers Party of Bangladesh boycotted the poll held under JP president HM Ershad.
In the third general election held on May 7, 1986, the turnout of voters was 61.07 per cent. BNP boycotted the elections. JP (Ershad) won 153 seats, AL won 76 seats, Jamaat-E-Islami Bangladesh 10 seats.
The second general election held on 18 February 1979 had a voter turnout of 50.94 per cent and the contesting parties were 29.
BNP won 207 seats, AL won 39 seats, Bangladesh Muslim League-Islamic Democratic League 20 and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal 8 seats. – Staff Reporter
