Remittance inflow shows uptrend

The inward remittance flow to the country during the first 19 days of the current month showed an encouraging sign, totalling $ 763.53 million as of July 19.The remittance inflow last month (June) totalled $ 1,057.63 million, according to the latest data provided by the Bangladesh Bank (BB). The central bank data also showed that some $ 14,460.52 million came as remittance in the last fiscal year (2012-13).
The central bank data showed that of the total remitted amount till July 19 of the current month, the highest $ 473.48 million came through the private commercial banks. This was followed by $ 271.87 million through four state-owned commercial banks, $ 8.68 million through two specialised banks and $ 9.50 million through foreign commercial banks operating in Bangladesh.
Analysing the BB data, it was found that the highest amount of $ 194.25 million came through Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd, followed by $ 95.90 million through Agrani Bank, $ 84.20 million through Janata Bank Ltd, $ 84.70 million through Sonali Bank Ltd, $ 41.50 million through National Bank Ltd, $ 33.02 million through Brac Bank Ltd and $ 7.07 million through Rupali Bank.
Of the total amount of $ 14,460.52 million remitted to Bangladesh during the last fiscal year (FY 13), $ 1,087.19 million came in May this year, $1,194.40 million came in April; $1,229.36 million in March; $1,163.18 million in February; $1,326.99 million in January; $1,287.31 in December 2012; $1,102.15 million in November; $1,453.69 million in October; $1,178.83 million in September; $1,178.65 million in August; and $1,201.15 million in July.
Country’s remittance inflow totalled $12,843.43 million in the fiscal 2011-12 compared to $11,650.31 million in the previous fiscal 2010-11.
According to Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain’s statement in Parliament on February 3, this year nearly 8.5 million Bangladeshi workers were employed in 157 countries across the world. – UNB
