RMG workers block highway in Savar

Vehicular movement on the busy Dhaka-Aricha highway was disrupted here for two and a half hours on Wednesday as workers from different garment factories blocked it in front of the collapsed Rana Plaza. The workers, aided by the relatives of Rana Plaza victims, squatted on the highway around 10am blocking traffic on it to press for their
six-point demand, including publishing a list of the workers killed and injured in the Rana Plaza collapse, giving compensation to the
victims, fixing minimum monthly wage for workers at Tk 8,000 and ensuring safety at workplaces.

As the agitators declined to move away from the highway following a request by police, the law enforcers dispersed them by charging baton and firing teargas shells and rubber bullets.

Police also arrested three people — Sabbir, Masum and Solaiman — from the spot.

Witnesses said the traffic on the highway resumed around 12:30pm after the agitators left the scene amid the police action.

On Tuesday, the workers also staged demonstrations on the highway and submitted a memorandum containing their demands to the Savar UNO.
