Rony finally arrested in city

Awami League MP Golam Maula Rony was arrested on Wednesday afternoon following an arrest warrant issued by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka earlier at noon.Magistrate Shahriar Mammud Adnan of the CMM Court passed the arrest order canceling Rony’s bail, following a petition of the complainant, The Independent Television assistant manager Yunus Ali, who alleged that MP Rony issued threat to him after he got bail from the court.
On July 20 (Saturday), the authorities of The Independent TV filed a case against Patuakhali-3 lawmaker Rony and 20/25 other unknown people for their alleged involvement in physically assaulting reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul of their channel at his Topkhana Road’s Meherba Plaza office in the capital. The case statement says that Rony and other accused people were accused of attempt to murder, vandalism and arson.
The two media men are members of a team that produces crime investigation show for the TV channel.
Meanwhile, on Saturday night, Golam Mawla Roni filed a counter case against Salman F Rahman, owner of the The Independent Television, and two others with Shahbagh Police Station accusing them of extortion and threatening to kill him.
On July 21, Metropolitan Magistrate Rezaul Karim allowed Rony bail upon a bond of Tk 5,000 after he surrendered before the court seeking bail.
On the same day the complainant filed a General Diary (GD) with Shahbagh Police Station saying that Rony threatened him after he got bail from the court and if the bail is not canceled the inquiry of the case would hamper.
The investigation officer of the case Sub-Inspector Abu Zafar made inquiry into the allegation and found it true, which led to the arrest of MP Rony.
On Tuesday at about 12.30 pm Rony told newsmen that he was going to resign. But within three hours, the AL legislator reversed his decision and briefed newsmen that he was not going to step down at this moment.
Earlier, Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on said his party will take action against its beleaguered MP Golam Maula Rony if he is found guilty.
“The law will take its own course. He (Rony) will be produced before the court. All are equal in the eyes of law. If any one commits crime, he’ll be punished as per the law,” he told reporters at the Secretariat.
Asked whether Awami League will take action against Rony, the ruling party spokesman said, “When the law will punish him, then the party will also take action against him.
Ashraf also said that Rony should stay aside from politics on his own if he is found guilty. “No guilty person should be there in politics, let alone Rony.”
Earlier in the day, a team of DB police arrested Rony from the city’s Badda area, hours after a court issued a warrant for his arrest cancelling his bail granted earlier in a case filed for assaulting two journalists.
Rony along with his supporters on Sunday reportedly assaulted Independent TV reporter Imtiaz Momin Sony and cameraman Mohsin Mukul Bakul when they went to Rony’s office on the 9th floor of ‘Meherba Plaza’ at Topkhana Road in the city to verify some allegations against the MP. – Court Correspondent
