Speaker denies claim Rony’s act did not embarrass her

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Wednesday denied making any comment about not being embarrassed by ruling Awami League lawmaker Golam Maula Rony’s act of beating up journalists on July 20.“I did not need to make such any comment. The statement of Rony was no correct. No discussion was taken place about his resignation,” she said while talking to reporters at her office in Parliament.
The Speaker called all concerned not to involve her in any dispute by spreading misleading information on such sort of incidents.
It was his personal matter whatever thing he disclosed at the press briefing, she added.
The Speaker also denied calling whips during the meeting with Speaker.
Meanwhile, whip ASM Firoz told reporters that he went to the office of the Speaker few minutes after Rony entered the office.
“No discussion on Rony’s designation was discussed. He rather wanted to know whether he could get protection in the case,” he added.
Rony on Tuesday morning announced that he is going to resign and met the Speaker in the afternoon.
Emerging from a meeting with the Speaker at her office on Tuesday afternoon, the AL lawmaker claimed that the Speaker assured him that neither she nor the parliament became embarrassed following his July 20 activities of beating up two journalists at his office.
Later, at a press briefing Rony echoed the same statement.
Rony had claimed the Speaker assured him that there was nothing embarrassing in it.
The Speaker also asked me to discuss the issue with the party high-ups,” Rony claimed.
Rony on Saturday beat up reporter Imtiaz Momin and cameraperson Mohsin Mukul, members of a team that produces a crime-investigative show, Talash, for Independent TV, at his Topkhana Road office in the capital.
The reporters went to Rony’s office on information that a bribe of more than Tk 1 crore, sent from Patuakhali, was to reach the lawmaker at his office.
