RU apologises for attack on students

Rajshahi University authorities have apologised for the attack on the students, agitating for a roll back of the fee hike and cancelation of evening courses.
In a statement on Saturday, it also warned against Facebook propagandas over the incident.
Police and ruling Awami League’s students wing Bangladesh Chhatra League attacked the protesting student on February 2, leaving over 50 people injured, many of whom sustained bullet injuries. Following the incident, the university was shut down for an indefinite period.“The university family is deeply hurt for the unfortunate incident,” said University’s PR administrator Ilias Hossain, speaking to journalists on Saturday.
He also claimed of holding a few round of talks with the students to restore normalcy on the campus.
Despite dubbing the movement as “political” since the attacks on the agitating students, the statement on Saturday referred it to as a ‘movement of the general students’.
Hossain said the authorities had announced withdrawal of the fee hike after protests by the students.
But the administration is yet to cancel the evening courses as it could not decide on the matter alone, he added.
The PR Director alleged that false, fabricated and provocative information were being circulated on the social networking sites, including facebook.
“A certain quarter is trying to get their political agenda served over the incident. They are being urged to show restraint immediately. Otherwise, legal steps will be taken against them.”
The general students on Friday demanded reopening of the university as well as suspension of the evening courses for the time being.
