Rajshahi – The 65th founding anniversary of the University of Rajshahi was celebrated o Thursday amid festivity and fanfare on the campus.
RU Vice Chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan inaugurated the programs at 10 am in front of the administrative building by hoisting the national flag along with university flag and releasing balloons.The University organised a colourful procession, discussion, and colourful events to mark the day.
The university’s administrative building, Senate Building, Kazi Nazrul Islam Auditorium and Halls were illuminated with dazzling lights.
Over a thousand teachers, students and staffs brought out a colourful procession led by University Vice-chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan that marched around the campus.
Later, a discussion meeting was held at the Senate building of where Former Vice-Chancellor of the University and also the former High-Commissioner of Bangladesh to the UK and Ireland Prof. M Sayeedur Rahman Khan addressed it as chief guest.
Prof. M Sayeedur Rahman Khan said the students should always try to enrich their potential through quality education and enrich the pride of the university.
He recalled the memory of Prof Shamsuzzoha, who was shot dead by the Pakistani army in 1969 during the movement against oppressive Pakistan’s rules.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. M Abdus Sobhan was in the chair while Student adviser Prof. Mizanur Rahman moderated it.
Prof Abdus Sobhan said, teachers, students and staffs should come assist him to run the university’s research and other academic activities smoothly for the better future of students and nation.
He also said since its inception in 1953, the university always came forward during important political movements in the interest of the nation.
President of the Rajshahi University Teachers Association (RUTA) Prof. M Nazrul Islam and Prof. Rakib Ahmed of Geology and Mine Dept were present there among others.
Noted, the University started its journey on July 6, 1953, with only 161 students and 68 teachers in six departments under three faculties with Prof Itrat Hossain Zuberi as the founding VC.
At present, the university has over 1,200 teachers in 58 departments under 10 faculties, and 5 research institutes and 17 residential halls – 11 for male students and 6 for female students – and around 35,000 students. – RU Correspondent
