RU teachers, students demand quick trial of teacher killer

Dhaka – Expressing dissatisfaction over the snail process in the trial of Md Shafiul Islam Lilon murder case the teachers and students of Rajshahi University (RU) on Thursday demanded quick trail of the case.They made the demand while addressing a human in front of the university senate building, organized by Rajshahi University Teachers’ Association (RUTA) marking the three years of the gruesome killing of the sociology Professor. Over five hundred teachers and students of the university participated in the human chain.
Sociology department chairman Professor Md Zulfiquar Rahman said that they were frustrated as they did not see any tangible progress in the trial of the gruesome murder, though three years have been passed since the killing.
“I come to know from the university legal cell that the trial into the Professor Shafiul murder case has been started. But, it appears to us that it took much time than usual and that it is not expected. We demand quick justice of the perpetrators”, he said.
He also demanded quick dispensation of justice in the teachers’ murder cases under speedy trial.
Among others, RU Teacher Association president Professor M. Nazrul Islam general secretary Professor Dr. Md. Ruhul Amin, bangla department Professor Sarkar Sujit Kumar, law department Professor Hasibul Alam Prodhan, Assistant Professor Md Shibly Islam spoke at the program.
On November 15 in 2014, RU sociology department professor AKM Shafiul Islam Lilon was hacked to death by unknown assailants near his house in Choddopai area on the outskirts of Rajshahi city.
After one year, Investigation officer (DB) of the case Rezaus Sadik submitted charge sheet to the Rajashahi Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on November 30, 2015 accusing eleven men including Rajshahi district Jubo Dal convener Anwar Hossain Uzzal in the case.
The other accused are– -Nasrin Akhter Reshma, Abdus Samad Pintu, Ariful Islam alias Manik, Sabuj Sheikh, Sirajul Islam alias Kalu, Al Mamun, Ibrahim Khalil alias “Tokai” Babu, Sagor, Jinnat and Arif Hossain. All of them were arrested earlier on charge of their involvement into the killing.
Later the trial of the case was transferred to Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court. Contacted, Rajshahi Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court Prosecution lawyer Abdus Salam told Greenwatchbd that the trail of case began in the first month of this year. The case is in the seedy trail tribunal, he also said.
In reply he said that all the accused in the cases are freed on bail. – RU Correspondent
