Saifur’s 6th anniversary of death observed

The sixth death anniversary of M Saifur Rahman, the country’s longest-serving finance minister, was observed with various programmes on Friday.
Leaders and activists of local BNP placed wreaths at the grave of Saifur Rahman at Baharmardan village in Moulvibazar Sadar upazila in the morning.
They also offered fateha there and prayed for salvation of his departed soul. Moulvibazar district unit BNP arranged a milad and discussion in the afternoon.Sylhet BNP organised a milad mahfil at Sylhet central mosque after Juma prayers.
Besides, Durre Samad Rahman and Saifur Rahman Foundation arranged a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club, Dhaka in memory of the late minister.
At the programme, the speakers recalled the role of Saifur Rahman in establishing the discipline in the financial sector of Bangladesh.
Former Chief Election Commissioner ATM Shamsul Huda was present as the chief guest at the programme with the foundation chairman and Saifur’s son, M Naser Rahman, in the chair.
BNP will arrange a doa mahfil at its Nayapaltan central office after Asr prayers on Saturday on the occasion seeking salvation of Saifur’s departed soul.
On September 5, 2009, Saifur, also a former BNP standing committee member, died in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at the age of 77.
Born at Baharmardan village in Moulvibazar Sadar upazila on October 6, 1932, Saifur was with BNP since its inception.
A chartered accountant-turned politician, Saifur had a unique record of preparing 12 budgets since Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. He was elected to parliament for four times.
Saifur took part in the 1952 Language Movement and was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2005.- UNB
