‘SB Bar reception for Justice SK Sinha, not outgoing CJ’

The Supreme Court Bar Association would accord reception to the newly appointed Chief Justice SK Sinha, but has decided not to give farewell reception to outgoing Chief Justice Muzammel Hossain.
SCBA president Khandakar Mahbub Hossain on Wednesday said that the outgoing Chief Justice will not be given farewell reception as he did not play a strong role in separation of the Judiciary from the executive and allegedly for there being a number of other allegations against him. The outgoing Chief Justice will have his last working day on Thursday while the new Chief Justice will take oath on Saturday. According to practice both are to get reception from the bar.
The SCBA president has been quoted to have said that the outgoing Chief Justice Muzammel Hossain put senior judges in tight situations while forming benches, took no step in respect of advocate MU Ahmed (deceased) and the attack on lawyers inside the SC premise on 29 December 2013, taking no step to bail out the president and the secretary of the bar when they were under arrest, taking no steps to secure the fundamental rights of the people, extending no help in maintaining the facilities enjoyed by the lawyers and in the construction of the bar building, plus allegations of nepotism.
The decision to accord reception to new Chief Justice SK Sinha and deny the same to the outdoing Chief Justice Muzammel Hossain was taken at a meeting of the SCBA. – News Desk
