President of Supreme Court Bar Association Advocate Jainal Abdin on Saturday urged the chief justice not to administer oath of the newly appointed judges of the appellate division of the supreme court who are controversial and appointed violating seniority. Addressing a press conference at the south hall of the supreme court bar association Jainal Abdin also requested the judges of both the divisions of the supreme court and the senior lawyers invited not to join the oath taking ceremony.
Meanwhile, Jatiuatabadi Ainjibi Forum will hold protest rally at 9 AM today (Sunday) at the Supreme Court. Similar rallies will be arranged at all bars of the country at 10-30 AM on the day, Barrister Rafiqul Islam Mia, president of the Forum announced at the press conference.
Jainal Abdin also gave a brief picture of the government’s interference on the judiciary. He said politicization of the judiciary has become a practice of the government. Four judges, he said, have been appointed to the appellate division of the Supreme Court who are justice Mohammad Anwarul Huq, justice Siddiqur Rahman, Justice Hasan Faiz Siddique and justice AHM shamsuddin Ahmed.
He said in this connection that the law minister had promised that he would frame a rule in this regard but he has failed to do so. The appointment of four judges, he said, was not only violation of seniority but one of them is also controversial. The question of impeachment was also raised against him in the parliament, he recalled.
He urged the chief justice so that he refrains from conducting oath of the controversial judge in the interest of the country.
Meanwhile, BNP leader MK Anwar, MP on Saturday said acting President Abdul Hamid has betrayed his own conscience by appointing a judge to the Appellate Division superseding seniority.
Addressing a human chain in front of the National Press Club, he said that the people would one day make the acting President accountable for his betrayal with the conscience.
“You’ve appointed a judge to the Appellate Division by superseding 41 judges. Ask your conscience, people of this country will one day punish you for betraying your own conscience,” MK Anwar said.
The human chain programme was organised by Dhaka district unit of Jubo Dal demanding the withdrawal of cases filed against BNP leaders, and their immediate release.
Anwar said Parliament with Speaker Abdul Hamid in the chair unanimously observed that a judge committed seditious offence by violating the Constitution, and urged the late president to form a supreme judicial council to take action against him. “Now, you upholding the post of president have appointed that judge to the Supreme Court.”
He came down heavily on Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir for his unguarded remarks on police attacks on BNP activists in recent times.
Asked about the use of police as a political tool, the home minister on Friday said: “The police can’t remain silent when common people are killed in front of them. The police have been asked to stop such killings.”
Anwar said, “You (govt) have killed the people by shooting and storming into their houses in the dark of night. And its trial must be held.” (Source: The New Nation)
