SC upholds verdict: Rajshahi Mayor suspension illegal

Dhaka – The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court verdict that declared illegal the suspension of Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul.A three-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha dismissed an appeal filed by the government challenging the HC verdict.
Bulbul’s lawyer Advocate Anminul Haque Helal said, “There is no legal bar for Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul to get back the post of RCC mayor following the SC order.”
The government suspended him May 7, 2015 from the post of RCC mayor as he was charge sheeted in three criminal cases including a murder during BNP-sponsored blockade.
On March 13 last year, a Rajshahi court sent the suspended RCC mayor to jail following his surrender before the court in connection with several cases filed against him.
However, he was finally released from jail on bail on June 1 last year.
In the meantime, Bulbul filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging the legality of his suspension order.
The HC had on March 10 last year declared the government order suspending Bulbul as the mayor illegal.
Later on, the government filed an appeal with the SC challenging the HC verdict. But, the apex court rejected the government appeal. – Staff Reporter
