Shibir chief placed on 14-day remand

A Dhaka court on Monday placed Islami Chhatra Shibir president Delwar Hossain and two others on 14 days’ remand in two cases filed over February 28 city violence.

Metropolitan Magistrate Harun-or-Rashid passed the order when police produced the trio before his court with separate remand prayers.

The two other accused are Shibir men Mohammad Hasan alias Sumon and Mohammad Sohab Sarkar.

Sub-inspectors Mahbubur Rahman and Afzal Hossain of Mohammadpur police station produced them before the court each seeking a 10-day remand in each of the cases.

After hearing, the judge granted a seven-day remand in each case.

Police filed the two cases—one under the Explosive Substance Act and the other under the penal code—for obstructing policemen from discharging their duties, exploding crude bombs and vandalising vehicles in front of Care Hospital on Mirpur road during daylong hartal enforced by Jamaat-Shibir on February 28.

Plainclothes police arrested the Shibir chief from the city’s Shyamoli area on Sunday afternoon. Later, police showed him arrested in the two cases. UNB
