Shibir man dies after ‘gunfight’ with police

An activist of the Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), student affiliate of the Jamaat-e-Islami, died after being shot during a ‘gunfight’ with police.The encounter had taken place at Satkania Upazila, Chittagong, on Wednesday.
Officer-in-Charge of the Satkania Police Station Khaled Hossain told journalists a police team, acting on a tip-off, raided the Chahada High School ground at Chairmanpar of Keutia Union Council at around 11am.He said that the Shibir activists had fired at approaching police, provoking retaliation and an encounter that left two Shibir activists critically wounded.
Two other activists managed to flee. The injured Shibir members – Mohammad Tafique and Jasim Uddin – were taken to the Chittagong Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where the duty doctor declared Jashim ‘brought dead’ at around 3:30pm, CMCH Police Outpost Nayek Pankaj Barua told journalists.
OC Hossain said that two police constables – Humayun Kabir and Shahriar babu – and Ansar VDP personnel Monju Mia were also injured in the skirmish.
Monju Mia was admitted to the Satkania Upazila Health Complex, while two others given first aid.
The police officer claimed that Rafique and Jashim were accused in several cases of murder and anarchy, mostly filed in connection with the violence that followed the death sentence of Jamaat leader Delawar Hossain Sayedee.
Saydee was given the maximum punishment by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on February 28 last year for crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
The OC said that acting on secret information, police raided the Chahada High School ground at Chairmanpara. “As police reached the spot, Shibir activists opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate with gunfire.”
Two bullet-hit Shibir activists had been arrested from the spot while others managed to flee, he said.
Police recovered a firearm and several rounds of bullets from the spot. -bdnews24.com
