Shibir man shot dead in Comilla clash

Comilla – An Islami Chhatra Shibir man was shot to death and 20 people, including cops, were injured in a clash between the Jamaat-Shibir men and law enforcers in Bipulasar Bazar area of Monaharganj upazila on Thursday evening.The deceased was identified as Anwar Hossain, 22, son of Abu Taher of Dopaimuri village in the upazila.
Police and locals said the activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Shibir tried to remove fishplates from the rail tracks in the area protesting the Supreme Court rejection of Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Mollah’s review pleas.
They also started vandalising shots and blasting crude bombs at the bazaar.
On information, police rushed in and tried to bring the situation under control.
Later, members of Border Guard Bangladesh and Rapid Action Battalion joined the policemen.
However, the Jamaat-Shibir men pelted the law enforcers with brick chunks, triggering a clash.
Anwar sustained bullet wounds in the clash and died. Twenty people, including three cops, were also injured in the clash.
The law enforcers brought the situation under control by firing over 200 rounds of bullet and seven rounds of teargas shells. – UNB
