‘Shikhan’ educating underprivileged children

Disadvantaged and distressed children are receiving education at 95
schools in 13 unions of Balaganj upazila of  Sylhet under a project
titled ‘Shikhan.’The project is running under the management of Save the Children, an
internationally active non-governmental organisation working to
promote children’s rights, with the technical support of the European
Union.
On December 26, some 95 female teachers were appointed for the 95 schools.
An eight-day workshop was held for the appointed teachers.
The text books for the children were distributed from the Upazila
Primary Education Office.
It is learnt, RDRS Bangladesh with the support of the European Union
and Save the Children has imparted education to 1.55 lakh children in
the past five years.
‘Shikhan’ has also completed informal primary education model tests.
With permission of Balaganj Upazila chairman and Balaganj Upazila
Nirbahi Officer, the 95 ‘Shikhan’ schools aimed at meeting the
education necessities of the downtrodden children were opened in
coordination with the union parishads.
All education materials for the schools are provided by RDRS Bangladesh.
’Shikhan’ project was launched with enrolment of children in February last.
Preparatory classes began from February to May 10.
After completing terminal examinations, the successful students will
get chance to study at high schools.
Balaganj upazila primary education officer Gokul Chandra Devnath
visited the ‘Shikhan’ schools.
Basically, these schools are working to spread the light of education
among the children who are deprived of their rights to education.
