13 killed as two buses, one with driver falling asleep, collide in Rangpur

Dhaka – At least 13 people, including two women, were killed and 42 others injured in a head-on collision between two buses at Teromile on the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway in Taraganj upazila on Wednesday morning, unb news agency reported.
Ten of the deceased were identified as Mohammad Ali, 30, Abdul Matin, 32, Chandan Roy, 38, Madrasah teacher Zinnat Ara, 36, Akul Mia, 26, Miton Mia, 25, bus driver Tayab Mia, 36, Mamdel Mia, 43, Subodh Chandra Roy, 36, and Mizanur Rahman, 40.Officer-in-charge of Taraganj Police Station Abdul Latif said the accident took place when a Comilla-bound bus collided with a local bus of ‘Tripti Paribahan’ at Teromile around 11:20am, leaving at least six people dead on the spot and 49 others injured.
The injured were whisked off to Rangpur Medical College Hospital and several other hospitals and clinics, the OC added.
Seven of the injured died at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, said its director Dr ASM Barkatullah.
Ten of the bodies were handed over to their families while the three unidentified bodies remain at the hospital morgue, he said.
Meanwhile, a three-member probe body has been formed to look into the road accident.
The district administration formed the body with additional district magistrate AKM Maruf Hasan as its head, said deputy commissioner Rahat Anwar.
The two other members of the committee are ASP Saifur Rahman and a BRTA official.
