The body of Social Welfare Minister Syed Mohsin Ali, who died on Monday at a Singapore hospital, has reached Dhaka.
He will be buried at his hometown Moulvibazar on Wednesday.
A Singapore Airlines flight carrying his body landed at Shahjalal airport around 11pm on Tuesday.
His ministry’s PRO Maidul Islam Pradhan said the coffin was taken to the minister’s Minto Road residence from the airport.
It will be kept at the BIRDEM hospital at night and placed at the Central Shaheed Minar on Wednesday for people to pay their respects.
It will be taken to Moulvibazar after a Namaz-e-Janaza at the Parliament building.
Awami League leader Ali died at the Singapore General Hospital at the age of 66.
He was admitted to the BIRDEM hospital on Sep 3 after being diagnosed with pneumonia. He was airlifted to Singapore on Sep 5 as his condition deteriorated.
Ali, a member of the Awami League’s National Council, fought in the Liberation War as a commander in Sylhet Division.
He was a member of the National Freedom Fighters’ Council and a central committee member of the Sector Commanders’ Forum.
An MBA graduate from a Kolkata university, Ali headed the Moulvibazar chamber for some time.
The three-time Moulvibazar municipality chairman led the ruling party’s district unit between 1998 and 2005.
He was made member of a parliamentary standing committee on civil aviation and tourism after he was elected to Parliament from Moulvibazar-3 constituency in 2008.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave him charge of social welfare ministry last year.
Locals say Ali was very popular in his constituency.
He made headlines for singing at various programmes and also for smoking in public. He also drew criticism for rapping journalists.
