Solo show at Bengal Art Gallery

Veteran artist Biren Shome’s solo painting exhibition titled “Life in Abstraction, Abstraction in Life” began at the Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts in the city’s Dhanmondi area on Tuesday evening.Eminent educationist Prof Anisuzzaman inaugurated the exhibition as chief guest, while publisher and cultural activist Mofidul Haq, former chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Prof Nazrul Islam, Director of Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts Subir Chowdhury, Professor of Faculty of Fine Arts of Dhaka University Prof Matlub Ali, artist Biren Shome, among others, were present at the inauguration.
A total of 70 artworks of Biren Shome are on display in the exhibition.
Biren Shome is one of the major painters of the ‘60s who has been consistently maintaining a significant role in the contemporary Bangladeshi art scene. He was a freedom fighter as well. Throughout his illustrious career, the artist has worked on varied themes, portraying them in his personal style and technique. His themes have always been closely connected to the soil of Bengal and its people.
Biren Shome was born in 1948 in Jamalpur. He completed his BFA from College of Arts and Crafts (presently Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka) in 1969. He has exhibited in India, Germany, England, Hong Kong, Brazil and other countries.
Biren Shome received many awards and accolades including Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin Award, Atish Dipankar Gold Medal, Palok Shishu Sahitya Sangshad Award, Chandrabati Gold Medal, Poet Abu Zafar Obaidullah Award and Begum Faizunessa Gold Medal.
The exhibition will end on January 12.
