Special court rejects Khaleda’s permanent bail plea

Dhaka – A special court has rejected the permanent bail plea submitted by BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia in connection with Zia Orphanage Trust graft and Zia Charitable Trust graft cases.Judge Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman of the special makeshift court in Bakhshibazar rejected the bail plea after hearing on it on Thursday noon.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia arrived at the special makeshift court around 11:45am.
The court on October 12 issued arrest warrant against Khaleda Zia after cancelling her bail petition in the two cases.
Later on October 19, the BNP chief surrendered before the court and secured bail in the cases.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case for embezzlement of over Tk 2.1 crore by forming a “fake” trust which existed only on paper in 2008.
In 2011, the anti-graft watchdog filed another case, accusing four persons, including Khaleda Zia, on charges of abusing power in setting up Zia Charitable Trust. – Staff Reporter
