Stocks start week down as major sectors dip

Stocks witnessed a sluggish trend on the first day of the week on Sunday as most of the indices of both Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges witnessed a fall.

The major falling sectors were pharmaceuticals and chemicals, financial institutions and insurance. A total of 176 securities of the large-cap group moved down due to lower activities.

The broader DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) closed the day with 39.53 points down at 5,773.61. The Shariah DSES and the blue-chip DS30 also followed the same trend with 2.24 points down at 1,350.59 and with 10.86 points down at 2,175.93.

At DSE, out of the day’s 337 traded issues, prices of 85 securities closed higher against 219 losing issues.

The major gaining issues were Sonali Ansh, Eastern Lubricant, Style Craft, Monno Stafflers and Apex Foods.

The major losing companies were ADVENT, Midas Finance, Popular Life, United Finance and Beximco.

Beximco Limited topped the turnover list followed by LHBL, Northern Jute, Padma Life and BRAC Bank.

The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed the day of the week with downward trend with its major CASPI 108.94 points down at 17,825.15. The trade value of the day was Taka 79.44 lakh and the volume was 35.04 crore.
